We recommend flying into Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR) in Florence and renting a car from one of the many rental companies operated nearby. There's a shuttle every 10 minutes or so that will take you from the terminal to the rental lot. Other options include Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA) in Pisa (~2 hours) or Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) in Rome (~3 hours). We recommend a rental car from these locations as well.
Google Flights is an excellent resource to find the best prices for varying dates and nearby airports. It also allows price tracking and notifications for when a certain route's price changes. Reach out if you have questions about booking tickets, and we will do our best to assist.
Please allow enough time for baggage collection/re-check and passport control once landing in Europe if you are going to be boarding a connecting flight to your final destination. Any less than 1 hour will likely not be enough.
Our strong recommendation for your own flexibility is to rent a car. The villas are in Tuscany, which is rural and doesn't have a lot of support for public transportation. Having a car will allow you to explore more in your downtime if you're using the villas as a home base.
High speed trains are also a great option for getting around major cities. If going this route, ensure you have transportation organized in advance to get to Bucine and even more importantly back to the city you need to catch a train from or fly out of at the end of your stay. There are no Ubers in Tuscany, and taxis will need to be pre-booked.
Autostrada A1 exit Valdarno-Montevarchi and after planning turn right, go into the direction of Siena. Between Montevarchi and Levane there is a big roundabout. Exit to direction Siena - Bucine. At that point, you don't need to enter any villages. You have to pass Bucine and Capannole (small village). After Capannole turn left to Badia Agnano, after 1 km you will find the signs to Villa Cini on your left, take the cypress lane and you are arrived.
Autostrada A1 exit Monte San Savino, then take the super strada and exit at Alberoro, follow the signs to Civitella in Val di Chiana, after Civitella go to Badia Agnano, after Badia Agnano go 1 km on your right, before Capannole, you will find the signs to Villa Cini.
If you only have a US driving license and are planning on driving while in Italy (Transportation and Driving in Italy) or other countries in Europe (full list here; look up the country you're traveling to and it should be under Travel and Transportation), you will likely need an International Driving Permit or risk being turned away at the rental counter/potential legal penalties if you are stopped. This is essentially a translated copy of your driver information along with your name and photo. Details can be found on AAA's here: International Driving Permit
The easiest way to obtain this is to go to your nearest AAA office and purchase one for $20. If you are overseas, you can still get one but it may take 2 months (Overseas details can be found here).
The nearest train station is in Bucine but it is small and with a few stops, it is better to go to Arezzo or to Montevarchi, where you can take a taxi or rent a car.
Ubers are almost non-existent and taxis might not be willing to take you all the way to the countryside or may be expensive. There's no guarantee they'll come pick you up at the end of your stay either. Please consider renting a car yourself or as part of a group.
Most guests will be staying on-site at one of the villas we have reserved for the weekend (Villa Cini, Villa Casanova, or Palazzo Vanneschi). We have the site from the afternoon of Saturday, August 10, through the morning of Wednesday, August 14.
For those that have been informed they are not staying at one of the villas due to space constraints, please consider one of the options below. We don't have any blocks reserved or anything, so just find something that suits you. If folks are interested, we can get you in touch with others to try to help you book at the same place pending availability.
